PATMOS

Our third stop on our mini cruise of the Greek Isles was Patmos, the sacred place where St. John is said to have written the Book of Revelation. Here we visited the island's UNESCO World Heritage Sites and took in the magnificent views from the capital city of Chora.

Destination: Patmos |Greece | Europe

Traveled: March 2015

Accommodation: Celestyal Olympia

Adventures: Cave of the Apocalypse, Monastery of Saint John the Theologian

Memorable Moments: 1) Disembarkation from our ship by tender boat. 2) That view from the monastery!!

Takeaways: 1) The UNESCO sites were underwhelming. 2) This island gave us the best view of our lives.

Recommendations: 1) The guidebooks say you can take the 40-minute walk up the cobbled path to the monastery from the town of Skala. Save yourself the time and energy and just take the bus or taxi. 2) Remember to have your shoulders and knees covered when visiting the monastery. 3) Try the famous cheese pie of Patmos.

Next Time: 1) Spend more time exploring the port town of Skala. The tavernas and shops need more attention. 2) Explore the island countryside.
